From pests to prevention - nurseries take control with BioSecure HACCP
19 June 2025
Production nurseries are flipping the script on pest management – moving from reactive fixes to proactive plant protection. At the centre of this shift is BioSecure HACCP: an industry-owned system helping growers prevent problems before they start.
For nurseries like Cameron’s in NSW and Dracaena Farm in Queensland, the results are clear – stronger crops, lower costs and fewer chemicals.
“We’ve trained staff to monitor pest thresholds, track data in the Audit Management System and use sticky traps to guide decisions,” says the team at Cameron’s. “That’s helped us cut back on sprays and double handling.”
At Dracaena Farm, practical changes like raised benches, quarantine zones and access controls have made a big difference to pest pressure from incoming stock.
Developed for the nursery and garden industry, BioSecure HACCP supports structured pest monitoring, cleaner systems and market access. It works alongside Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme, Australia (NIASA) and EcoHort as part of the Australian Plant Production Standard (APPS), and it’s modular – so growers can start small.
“Start with one thing – set up a quarantine area, train your staff, or use the templates,” says Barry Naylor, GIA Extension Officer. “Then build from there.”
With GIA’s Audit Management System now replacing paper records, growers can log inspections, track inputs and simplify audits – all in real time.
It’s not just about compliance – it’s about confidence, control and crop quality.
