Australians purchased a record-breaking 4.7 plants per adult in 2021–22 according to the industry’s most recent census* and the nursery industry has a plan to ensure that both new and experienced gardeners driving this increase have all the tools they need to be successful.
Greener Spaces Better Places has released its second series of horticultural videos to help all levels of gardeners elevate their gardening game.
In the latest School of Thumb series, a panel of plant experts visits three Victorian locals who are among the 65% of Australians who bought nursery products in the previous year. The experts provide snappy lessons to solve common plant problems.
Fresh from charming audiences at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, standup comedian, writer and presenter, Claire Hooper, returns as host of the Australian series. As one of Australia’s finest comedians Claire brings fun and inspiration to each episode while helping plant enthusiasts maximise their home spaces.
Greenlife Industry Australia CEO, Joanna Cave, said School of Thumb helps Australians create thriving greenspaces in homes, backyards and public areas across the country.
“Gardening experts remove the guesswork with easy, expert tips for home gardeners, including plant selection and care advice” Ms Cave said.
“In this series, residents learn how to make indoor plants thrive, the key to citrus success and ways to bring herbs to the ‘burbs.
“Having plants inside your home has many benefits as well. Natural air purifiers, plants improve air quality by removing pollutants and toxins from the atmosphere.
“We can also benefit from plants for our mental wellbeing, as a home filled with plants is known to help you feel relaxed and balanced.
“Since it spotlights the production and retail nurseries that produce and sell plants and garden products, I encourage retail nurseries, garden centres and plant stores to build awareness of the horticulture industry’s important role by sharing School of Thumb with their audiences.”
School of Thumb is set to visit New South Wales in the third series due out later this year.

Greener Spaces Better Places is a national collaboration between research, business, government and the greenlife industry to form Australia’s largest network of green spaces advocates. It ensures that, as urban places grow, so do green spaces, to make Australia’s urban areas the greenest in the world.
